I live in Los Angeles, so that makes me (and several million other people) uniquely qualified to discuss what it’s like to live in Los Angeles. I’ve also lived in Los Angeles for three years, so that makes me expert-level qualified to discuss what it’s like to live in Los Angeles. Oh, and I’m in the entertainment industry, so I know exactly what makes this town run.
Just kidding.
There’s this: there are no experts on this town, or this industry, or on “making it” in L.A. (Which, yes, is a question I get often.) Sure, there are people who know the city really well, and people who know the entertainment industry really well. And if you want to be a host, or actor, or screenwriter or whatever else there is to be in entertainment, there are, like, thousands of people who you should listen to before you take my advice.
But there’s this, too: L.A. is not filled with a super human race of people that are twice as intelligent, twice as hard-working, twice as attractive and twice as shrewd as you are. So if you’re deciding on whether or not to move to Los Angeles, you should remember that, even if it sounds incredibly oversimplified.
I had to remind myself of that little fact. Before I first moved out here at the start of 2013, I had to actually convince myself that L.A. people aren’t special, or different, or smarter, or better. They’re exactly the same as wherever you are now. They’re just as dumb, just as superficial, just as likely to be trapped by their own whims and faults.
So if you’re on that fence trying to decide whether you should move to Los Angeles to pursue a dream (or even just to have a different experience, entertainment industry be damned!), the answer is yes. Unequivocally, yes.
Sure, there’s a lot of bullshit out here, but if you’re moderately capable enough to keep your life together wherever you are now, nothing is really going to change in one of the biggest cities in the world. You’ll figure it out and roll with the punches. You always do, right?
If anybody tells you that you’ll be eaten alive by this big bad city, dismiss that bullshit tout de suite. Go west, young man, and grow up with the country.
